Agriculture and climate change adaptation plenary session
Not all agricultural development projects increase resilience says Gernot Laganda from the International Fund for Agricultural Development. Some value chain projects focus on market linkages and public-private partnerships, but tend to underestimate the impact of climate change on productivity.IIEDApr 29, 2013 at 1:12 PM
Farmers can’t afford to take risks – climate finance could create a financial ‘buffer’ says Gernot Laganda from IFAD to allow them to innovate and try out new crops or crop varieties. Connecting smallholders to markets is also a critical ingredient to increasing climate resilience.IIEDApr 22, 2013 at 6:31 PM

One of the barriers to community-based adaptation scaling up is that policy structures are being over-ridden by political and power interests says Edidah Ampaire, from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture. Edidah urged a need to manage the “political interference” – and says that NGOs could play a more vocal role in questioning that interference.IIEDApr 22, 2013 at 6:26 PM
Edidah Ampaire, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Uganda outlines how the Institute carries out CBA work related to agriculture. It assesses climate risk and vulnerability at the community level – looks at the risks and coping strategies and then integrates the coping strategies with science. Then they hold stakeholder workshops where the institute presents options to farmers for them to assess and discuss.IIEDApr 22, 2013 at 6:22 PM

One plant on Mr Asaduzzaman’s balcony is now blooming at a different time. “What is happening to the plants?” he asked. “Imagine if this begins to happen to rice or wheat”, he asked. “This could lead to great instability in food prices – what will happen in the future?” he asked in his final comments on the agricultural plenary.IIEDApr 22, 2013 at 7:11 PM

I am unable to attend the conference but have a strong interest in adaptation developments in Bangladesh and South Asia generally. I am particularly interested in the idea of adaptation as transformation rather than simply resilience.

Bummed not to be able to be there in person, but excited to learn nonetheless. #CBA7

In the beginning of CBA 7, I was in a remote village of Central Nepal to find out their situation due to climate change. Still, they need actions on-the-ground rather than macro level workshops. I hope CBA 7 will be instrumental to share real field adaptation learning and way out.
